Del feudalismo a la Modernidad
La línea del tiempo

From Feudalism to Modernity
The timeline

The map of the fourteen centuries that set up The Demolition: how a whole way of seeing the world is assembled, sustained, cracks, and falls — from the crisis of the 3rd century to the year a Frenchman decides to doubt everything, methodically.

History does not announce when it changes epochs. The ones who announce it are the historians — centuries later, and arguing.

IEl marcoThe frame

Una palabra prestada: paradigma

A borrowed word: paradigm

Toda época se cree eterna. Esa convicción es parte del paradigma.
Every age believes itself eternal. That conviction is part of the paradigm.

Before walking through the centuries, a tool. Thomas Kuhn (1922–1996), physicist and historian of science, published The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1962. There he defines paradigm in the strict sense: "universally recognized scientific achievements that, for a time, provide model problems and solutions to a community of practitioners". That is: the set of practices, methods, and assumptions a scientific community shares — which problems count, with what instruments they are solved, what counts as an answer.

Science, says Kuhn, does not advance in a straight line. Walk through the cycle:

And the new paradigm begins to age the very day it wins. The book's own favorite example: from Ptolemy's heavens to Copernicus's.(Kuhn, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, 1962)
Aviso de método — esto es una analogía
Method note — this is an analogy

Kuhn defined the paradigm for scientific communities, and he himself restricted the term to the sciences — though since the 1960s the word has been used, in an extended sense, for any deep change of model. Kuhn wrote not a word about feudalism, and nothing that follows is in his work.

What we do here is extend the figure: reading a whole worldview —theocentrism, lordship, the criterion of authority— as if it worked just like a paradigm: centuries of normality, anomalies that pile up (a plague with no answer, two popes at once, a machine for multiplying books, a Sun that does not orbit), crisis, and a revolution of meaning. The extension is a teaching analogy.

Tap any segment to jump to its chapter. Two things to notice first: the segments overlap (the Renaissance treads on the Late Middle Ages: epochs do not wait in line), and beneath them run the empires, which are institutions, not eras: the Western Roman one dies in 476; the Eastern one —Byzantium— carries on alone until 1453; the Carolingian one lasts a breath; and the Holy Roman Empire spans almost the whole map.

Historiographical note. Periodization is not a fact: it is a decision. The current division of the Middle Ages is tripartite —High (5th–10th), Full (11th–13th), Late (14th–15th)— and even so disputed: there is no universal agreement on the cutoffs, the boundaries fit large regions poorly, and the whole series is charged with Eurocentrism.

This is the installation of a paradigm: theocentric, rural, hierarchical. For centuries it will function as the "normal" — and no one inside sees it as one option among others.

El hilo transversalThe cross-thread962 ⟶ 1806

Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico

The Holy Roman Empire

In 962 Pope John XII crowns Otto I emperor: the imperial institution is reborn as translatio imperii — the transfer of Rome's inheritance, via Charlemagne, to a new political structure. At its height (13th century) it covers almost all of Central Europe.

It is not an epoch: it is an institution that runs through all that follows —Full, Late, Renaissance, the whole of Modernity— until Francis II abdicates in 1806, with Napoleon opposite him. An elective emperor (seven prince-electors since the Golden Bull, 1356), hundreds of territories inside it —the Germans called it a "patchwork carpet"— and permanent tension with the papacy: at Canossa (1077), an excommunicated emperor did penance three days in the snow so the pope would forgive him. Voltaire finished it off with a jab: neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.

That is why on the map it runs as a band and not as a segment: confusing an institution with an era is a category error — like slotting "the football league" between "the 80s" and "the 90s".
